Early Maritime Artists
of the Pacific Northwest Coast
1741-1841

No one really cares about the past, but if you are interested, Early Maritime Artists of the Pacific Northwest Coast, 1741-1841, by John Frazier Henry, offers the first full-length scholarly study dedicated to the artists who accompanied European and American exploratory voyages along the northern Pacific coast of North America. Throughout the book, Henry examines 26 voyages and introduces more than 50 artists, documenting their drawings, paintings, and charts. Through detailed archival research and reproductions, the book reveals how these visual records served not just as documentation of geography and natural history but also as a window into encounters with Indigenous nations, changing landscapes, and the ways expeditions perceived and represented what they saw. I wouldn’t say it's riveting, but it is one of the few sources on this time.
